The first Global Economic and Ethics Forum (GWEF) was held in Berlin-Mitte on the 10th and 11th of March 2008 in the "ewerk" venue. The conference, which was concieved, organised and hosted by the magazines politik&kommunikation and pressesprecher, engaged more than 200 participants from throughout the world of politics, economics and the media to broaden and reinforce critical dialogue on comtemporary ethical concerns within the scope of economics.
Monday evening, as a prelude to the congress, Michael Müller, Federal Secretary for Environment /Environmental Protection and Reactor security stressed the importance of collective recponsibility and action in efforts towards reducing mankind’s impact on the climate.
In his opening statement on Tuesday Federal Interior Minister Schäuble laid-out his views on the future of the relationship between economics, politics and civil society. Schäuble also stressed that he could not help but get the impression that there are also parts of the economic elite which occasionally suffer from endemic integration problems.
SPD General Secretary Hubertus Heil did not necessarily let the economic elite off the hook either. He emphasised that parts of the financial system still function as parallel societies. Heil joined the forum’s closing discussion titled "Bringing CSR to the Agenda" along with Gerd Billen (Manager of the Federal Consumer Association), Dr. Wilm Herlyn (Editor-in-Chief of the Deutsche Presse Agentur) and Dr. Klaus Mittelbach (Managing Director of econsense). Moderation was handled by publicist Dr. Hajo Schumacher.
Central to the conference were the midday assemblies. Within the space of these innovative discussion formats more than 30 Members of Parliment interacted with representatives from Federal Ministries, the media and conference attendees. Participants included Gerda Hasselfeldt (VP of the German Parliment, CSU), Claudia Roth (Federal Head of B90/Green Party), Edelgard Bulmahn (Chairman of the Committee for Economics und Technology, SPD), Eduard Oswald (CSU, Chairman of the Financial Committee of the German Parliment), Otto Fricke (FDP, Chairman of the Budget Committee), Hans-Joachim Otto (FDP, Chairman of the Committee for Culture and Media), Bascha Mika (Editor-in-Chief, taz) and Stephan-Andreas Casdorff (Editor-in-Chief, Tagesspiegel), amongst others.
The prevailing general consensus amongst all discussion participants was that Corporate Social Responsibility become even more transparent, and that it should need to meet certain regulatory framework, which must also be established.
The most interesting results of the midday assemblies will be consolidated for print in a publication on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) und Corporate Citizenship, which will be available after the Easter Holiday.
